Book Sale big success

The FOHL (Friends of the Hartshorne Library) participated in "Hard Time's Day" this last weekend by having a book sale. It was a big success, raising over $450, with many people coming in and buying books. We would like to thank our awesome friends group for doing such a fantastic job. We will have another sale early next year.

Two Summer Reading Programs were held at the Hartshorne Public Library yesterday. The presenter was Joanne McMillan. She is a puppeteer and artistic director. Her unique style of puppeteering is a combination of storytelling with every type and size of puppet and costumes and extensive audience participation. The livelely action and dialogue was complemented with large clorful projected photos, art, animations and video clips.

The first program was for the Teens and consisited of them making puppets and rehearsing a skit. The second program for the children consisited of the Teens putting on the skit with all the kids getting to particiate. It was a big success.

Author to Visit Hartshorne Public Library

A book event is scheduled for Saturday, May 22 at the Hartshorne Library at 1:00pm

Joy Jones, McAlester author, will be previewing and reading from her book, Higher Ground, One Woman’s Journey. Signed copies will be available for purchase following her presentation.

A synopsis of the book is as follows:
Coping with the trauma of her canceled wedding, 52-year-old Bonn Ritland thought she was just going for a drive to clear her mind. Instead, at her first sighting of the Sedona Red Rocks, she knew the drive down this Arizona highway was a continuation of her spiritual quest. Higher Ground chronicles four years of Bonn Ritland's life as she finds her way to more conscious living. What readers discover from the Foreword is that Bonn Ritland is a sobriquet for author Joy Jones. Writing the book as a novel freed Joy to explore her personal truth from the safety of relative objectivity. The movie-worthy story that resulted was best published as fiction--even though it's all true. Inspirational, and refreshingly candid, Higher Ground is much like Terry McMillan's Waiting to Exhale for its gal-pal discourses on romance, a beautiful Southwest setting, and an assortment of true-life "Millennial" males. It goes beyond a wonderful story, though. Ms. Jones moved to McAlester last year from Santa Fe, NM when she married Clint Warnock. She is a retired educator with 36 years teaching experience; Sturdent Teacher Coordinator for Northern Arizona University, and Educational Consultant for the New Mexico Dept. of Education. Currently she is available to speak to civic, corporate and spiritual audiences on Conscious Living for the 21^st Century.

Nita Beshear to visit Library

The Hartshorne Library Friends of the Library are proud to bring Nita Beshear, local author, to the Hartshorne Library on May 8t at 1:00pm. This is a quote from the back of her book, "Devoted to Quilting"
"These devotionals are for quilters at all ability levels and also for lovers of quilts. From the quilt spectator to the quilting professional, a quilt is more that a simple coverlet. The process of creating a quilt provides moments of frustration, fear, stress, fun, or adventure. Sherry Morrow to visit Library

You can do all of that and more @ your library. Celebrate National Library Week, April 11-17. Hartshorne Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by offering amnesty on any overdue materials returned during that week. This is our way of saying thanks to the community for your patronage. Fines will also be waived for overdue materials deposited in the book return during this week.

Hartshorne Library offers Downloadable Audio Books

Hartshorne Library is now offering downloadable audio books through Ingram Digital. These "books" can be downloaded onto a computer, then uploaded to your iPod, MP3 players or other audio devices.

My iLibrary digital audio features a user-friendly interface that is both PC and MAC compatible. All titles are downloadable and playable via iPodand iPhone, in addition to hundreds of other MP3 players. The downloadable materials cover a wide range of fictional and non-fictional topics, and run on easy-to-use free software available from Ingram Digital MyLibrary website. In order to borrow and use a specific format of digital media, you must download and instal the proper software.

Looking for Materials plus Readers' Advisory

We have several ways to find materials not only in the Hartshorne library, but all virtually worldwide. Besides our catalog, which not only searches the Hartshorne library, but all the libraries in our system, there is also World Cat. This is a way that you can search in many libraries throughout the world to find the book that you want. You may search on your own or ask the staff to aid in your search. We then can request the book for you. The cost of an interlibrary/inter-branch loan is $1.50, this is to help with postage cost. We have found many items that are out of print and obscure.

Hartshorne library has a few readers’ advisory sources. First there is Novelist, for adults and Novelist K-8 for children. Both of these are excellent guides to fiction books. Within the database they have an “Author Read-Alikes” section. You can find other authors that write similar, to your favorite author. If you need any assistance, don’t hesitate to ask staff for help.

Another source that has been, until now, has until now, only available in big bulky reference books, is the Wilson’s Core Collection database. This database lets you search for books that are highly recommended. You can search Fiction as well as non-fiction, children and Young Adults. You can search by title, author, even keyword. It is very user friendly, but again, for assistance the staff is always available. All this and more can be found on www.oklibrary.net/hartshorne.

Our Friendly Library

Our library can be summed up in one word, and that word is “Welcoming”. We try to accommodate everybody’s library needs. We have books, of course, computers, of course, but we offer so much more.
We are right in the middle of tax season and we have some Federal forms. The state forms were not sent to the libraries any longer, but they are available online. Although we are not a tax service we can help you find a form you need. Any form, state or federal can be found online. They can be printed out for a nominal fee of 10 cents a page. You are also able to come in and file your taxes online if you so wish.
We have recently implemented our PC reservation and also have print management. Although you may think this is a nuisance at first, it is put in place to do away with unwanted print jobs. It also now allows you to print to our color printer for 25 cents a page. I’m not saying it is without its issues but I am confident these will be worked out over time.
Our fax is another service that is used extensively. It cost nothing to receive a fax unless you receive more than 10 pages.
If you are an early bird please visit us in the morning, we now open at 8 o’clock. This is a good time to enjoy peace and quiet. If it is to use the computer, check out books, read the newspaper or just come in and have a cup of coffee and visit you are always welcome and we are glad to see you.
If you have ever been in our library after school you will really see how "weloming" we can be. This library is full of Kids. Our town has very few things to interest our teens. They are attacted to the library for the programs, of course, but also the computers and books. The library has also become a social center, that if it doesn't get too out of hand, is a good thing. We try to be a safe and friendly place. I really think that we have gone a long way in achieving this goal.
In conclusion I think that I have shown that EVERYONE is welcome in our library and we will go to great lengths to meet their needs.

Books and Movies

Some popular movies that are out now are based on books. Here are a few that are available at the Hartshorne Library. Whether you have seen the movie or not we have always heard that the book is better than the movie, come and check these book out to decide for yourself.

The first is “The Blind Side” by Michael Lewis. This is a biography about a young man that is born into poverty to a mother who is addicted to crack. He is one of thirteen children, does not know what his name is or his birthday, let alone how to read or write. His life changes when an evangelical family finds him on the streets. Through their love they help him to overcome these obstacles and become one of the most highly paid football players in history. It is an inspirational story that must be read to fully appreciate the journey of this man.

Nicholas Sparks, author of “The notebook”, “A Walk to remember”, “Nights of Rodanthe” to name just a few, has yet another book that has been made into a movie. The title is “Dear John”. The book is about John, angry rebel, who has dropped out of school and sees the army as an answer to what to do with his life. After enlisting he meets a Savannah, and in a very short time falls in love. It looks like both have found the love of their life until 9/11 happens. John decides to re-enlist and Savannah, because of the long separation falls in love and marries another man. On returning home John must comes to terms with the fact that his true love is married---and must face the hardest decision of his life.

Greg Heffley is thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. The hazards of growing up are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary.

Another book is Alice in Wonderland. This classic book by Lewis Carroll is being made into a movie starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton.
Bored on a hot afternoon, Alice follows a White Rabbit down a rabbit-hole without giving a thought about how she might get out. And so she tumbles into Wonderland: where animals answer back, a baby turns into a pig, time stands still at a disorderly tea party, croquet is played with hedgehogs and flamingos, and the Mock Turtle and Gryphon dance the Lobster Quadrille. In a land in which nothing is as it seems and cakes, potions and mushrooms can make her shrink to ten inches or grow to the size of a house, will Alice be able to find her way home again?

The last book is “The Lightening Thief”. This is a Young Adult (and aren’t we all young adults) book. This is a first in “The Olympian” series by Rick Riordan. This books a fantasy along the line of Harry Potter. A young boy finds out that his father is Poseidon, God of the Sea. With his compadres, a satyr and a demigod daughter of Athena, they set out on a quest to reach the gates of the underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

These are just a few books of which movies have been made. Who knows you may even read a book that has yet to receive that honor.

New services

Recently Hartshorne Library has implemeted "PC Reservation". This is a computer managment system. It requires the patron to log in using their library card. It also has built in time limits that frees the staff for more important tasks. We have had it for about a month and besides the first week we are very pleased with the response from the public. We encourage any comments.
We also have a new scanner, printer and fax combination machine. The staff is extremely pleased with this despite a few gliches in the fax capabilities.
The Library System is looking into providing downloadable audio books. This will allow you to "borrow" an audio to download onto an ipod or any other Mp3 device. We are now in the process of selecting the titles to offer. We hope for a very positive response to this. Again, we encourage any comments.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is upon us again. We at Hartshorne Library have so much to be thankful for. First and foremost we are thankful to our patrons. Without them we would not be able to have a library that is inviting and welcoming. The fact that people of all ages feel comfortable and safe coming in here is a credit to their tolerance and understanding. I feel that we have a place that equally serves the old and young with the same amount of respect.

We are thankful for the city that is always there when we need assitance. They feel a responsibility to this library to keep it beautiful as well as functional.

We are thankful to the system we belong to for being supportive. We live in a very changing world and they try very hard to keep up with things, while still trying to uphold the Library's ideals.

Finally, I am thankful to my co-workers and my colleagues. Without their support and imput I would be lost.

As you can see we have a lot to be thankful for. We hope that everyone and their families enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving.

New Library Hours

Hartshorne Library will be opening at 8am Tuesday through Friday. We are participating in a pilot project to study the usage of different hours of business. Hartshorne is exploring early hour usage, while McAlester Public Library will be opening on Sundays 1:30-5:00. We will be conducting this project until June. At the conclusion we will study the feasibility of the new hours.

Greg Rodgers visits Library

Choctaw storyteller, Greg Rodgers, visited the Library Saturday Oct, 24. We were pleased with the good turn-out. Several of the students from nearby Jones Academy was in attendence. Greg spoke about how he gathered his stories and how he got started. Telling how he apprenticed under Tim Tingle, another Choctaw storyteller. He then told a couple of scary stories, very apropos for this time of year. The kids were very attentive and at the end of the presentation they had a few stories to share with him. We were very honored to have him and we are considering inviting him back for the Summer Reading Program next year.

FOHL Annual meeting

The Annual FOHL meeting was held on Sept. 27. Virgina Barlow called the meeting to order and reported on the projects the FOHL did in the last year. Shirley McBee gave a treasurer's report. Election of Officers were held, with the motion made to keep the existing officers. There was discussion concerning money to be given to the Library's Chidren's Summer Reading Program as well as money given to Chamber of Commerce for Christmas bags for the children.
The meeting was very well attended in large part because of our very special guest speaker, Barbara Smitherman. She is the author of "Engaging the Sons of Darkness". A fictinal book that is set in the Jack Fork Mountains. This is her first book. She related that she wrote it is 36 days. She lives in McAlester with her husband, Doug and is currently working on her second book. The FOHL as well as the Hartshorne Library would like to thank Barbara for coming and sharing her story.

Tae Kwan Do Exhibition

Saturday as our last Teen Program the McAlester Tae Kwan Do came to exhibit their talents. We had a great turn out for the program and all that attended enjoyed themselves. Several boards were broken by all the students. The black belts spent time showing us how they could even brake cement blocks. Kirsten the Queen of Theatre visits Hartshorne Library

On the 16th Kirsten the Queen of Theatre put on two programs, one for the children and one for the Kids. We had a great turnout and the kids had lots of fun. The idea was to get the kids to act out scenes from their life and get them to be creative.
Our next program is the 23rd at 10:30am.

Trip to NYC

At the end of May I, along with four other librarians went on a trip to New York City to attend the BookExpo of America. The conference gave us a chance to meet many famous authors as well as a few celebrities, such as Kathy Lee Gifford. We stood in many lines to get autographs and pictures of our favorite authors. Some of the more well know ones were David Baldacci, R. L. Stine, Lisa Scottolini, Heather Graham, James Patterson, Ridley Pearson, Nicholas Sparks and the list goes on and on. We were also honored to see and get an autograph from Chesley Sullenberger “Sulley” the pilot who heroically landed a plane in the Hudson River. The whole experience was awesome and sureal.
We did do a little site seeing. We visited Time Square, the Statue of Liberty as well as Ellis Island. We opted out of going to the top of the Empire state building, but we did go inside. We went to Rockefeller Center and several other tourist attractions. We went on a couple of tours that took us across the Hudson river into Brooklyn and then we toured Manhattan and was able to get off in China Town, Central Park and of course Ground Zero where we got an awesome picture. All in all I am very grateful Iwas able to go, but I was glad to be back home.

Book Sale Big Success

We are proud to announce the Friends of the Hartshorne Library was able bring in over a thousand dollars at the Book Sale held Febrary 27th and 28th. We appreciate the community for all ther support. The money will be used for children's programing and other items that cannot be purchased throught the library system. I would like to everyone who helped in making it possible. Author’s Work Promotoes Spiritual, Emotional Healing

Dr. Linda Bowlby of Oklahoma City, author, will be at Hartshorne Public Library Saturday, Dec. 6 from 1-3:30 p.m. to meet with the public and sign copies of her various books. The visit is sponsored by Hartshorne’s Friends of the Library chapter.

In her works, Dr. Bowlby integrates a broad range of spiritual and emotional healing principles with conventional information from Western medicine. She is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and has worked as a pathologist and psychiatrist. She spent five years in Alaska working extensively with women recovering from sexual trauma, alcoholism and eating disorders.

Her works include: Carol & Edna, Red Earth Wisdom, Red Earth Woman and Renaissance Woman, all adult nonfiction; and Future Hope, How Amazon Got Her Name, Is That So, Nasaria’s Family, Nentuk’s New Family and The Rock Garden, all children’s books.

Hard Time's Day

The Hartshorne Library is a very good place to visit on “Hard Times Day”. We have a lot material to check out and view about “The Great Depression”, in both adult and children’s books to videos and even music that was popular. Some books include the classic “Grapes of Wrath”, by John Steinbeck (also available on DVD) and ”Water for Elephants”, by Sara Gruin, a book about circuses in the 1930’s. In adult non-fiction available for check out are “Hard Times: an oral history of the Great Depression”, by Studs Terkel , “The Coming of the Third Reich”, by Richard Evans and “Rising in the West: the true story of an "Okie" family from the Great Depression through the Reagan years”, by Dan Morgan, to name just a few.
Children’s books include the award winning “Bud, not Buddy”, by Christopher Paul Curtis, “Potato: a tale of the Great Depression”, by Kate Leid, and Esperenza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, a story about a young girl that immigrates with her Mother from Mexico during the Depression. There is also the American Girl Series about “Kit”, a girl growing up in the Depression. Oklahoma books include Hillback to Boggy”, by Jesse Willard Speer” A family struggles for survival, during the Great Depression, in a tent in the hills of Oklahoma and “Out of the Dust”, by Karen Hesse, a series of poems, fifteen-year-old Billie Jo relates the hardships of living on her family's wheat farm in Oklahoma during the dust bowl years of the Depression.
We also have the American “Cinderella Man” a great video selection.
In our reference materials there are many books on Hartshorne, dating back to before the depression, including the Hartshorne Sun on microfilm to a fine book “Dusky Diamond Fields” with pictures and stories. We have a DVD to view in the library, about a local artist, Linus Bailey, It is a homemade video with him showing paintings he drew from memory of his childhood in the 1930’s. This video is great, because not only do you get to see his paintings he tells stories about that time.
Our library also offers two on-line services to help anyone looking for their “roots”. These are free to use in the library, with a library card.

Never seen a spider like this one.
The spider species Argiope aurantia is commonly known as the Black and Yellow Garden Spider or Writing Spider. It is common to the lower 48 of the United States, southern Canada, Mexico, and Central America. They have distinctive yellow and black markings on their abdomens and a mostly white cephalothorax. Males range from 5 to 9 mm; females from 19 to 28 mm. Like other members of Argiope and almost all other spider species, they are considered harmless to humans.

Library Cats

We had some visitors the other morning. These cats live next door in a abandoned house. The decided to enjoy the cool weather. There are three kittens even though only two are visible. When they moved we saw a grey tabby. I have no idea where it is.

Leaky Roof

Water water everywhere!! Our roof finally started leaking seriously. It has some minor leaks, but this was a real gusher. I arrived and found a pool of water in the lobby. Several books, thankfully they were weeded books, were ruined. We also lost a few ceiling tiles. The city workers came and temporarily "fixed" the roof. Hopefully we will get a more long lasting "fix" soon. We decided to take advantage and watered a few plants. I guess some good comes out of everything.

Hartshorne – June 26, 2008 – Hartshorne Library is pleased to announce that as of August 1, 2008, families with young children, and adults seeking to support their studies or improve their math or grammar skills, will all have experts waiting to help on the Library’s website.

Expanding one-to-one online tutoring and homework help to more students is a natural next step for the library as we continue to find new ways to serve everyone in the community. Parents are teaching younger children to use the computer, to learn and explore their world, just as adults turn to technology to help them with everything from GED preparation to resume writing.

Addition of K-3 Enhances Library Support of Early Learners
Parents who bring their young children to the library’s Live Homework Help service expose them to rich learning resources, increase the child’s ability to succeed in computer literacy and provide practice for fine motor skills.

The Library Supports Adult Learners Online
Adults have always come to the library for assistance with research, earning their GED and other Adult Continuing Education support—as well as grammar help with their resume or work-related writing. Now you may connect to a live expert online, either on the library’s computers during library hours, or from the privacy of your home computer until 9:00 p.m.

How it Works
Anyone with a library card may log-on to www.hartshorne.lib.ok.us , go to the Live Homework Help link, select a grade level from K – 12, College Intro, or Adult Learner, and pick from one of 12 subjects, depending on your grade level. You will then enter an Online Classroom where a certified subject expert tutor will work with you in a chat window, on a drawing board, and through website and file sharing, to resolve your educational challenge.

The service is available from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. The library’s live, online service is provided by Tutor.com, the largest online tutoring company with more than 2,000 certified, background checked tutors. Tutor.com recently won a Parent’s Choice Gold Award, their highest honor. Hartshorne Library has been serving the community’s students with this award-winning resource since May, 2008 and we are pleased to now add early learners and adult learners to those benefitting from this excellent service.

We had visitors this month. Olga Tarasova, editor and chief of the magazine entitled “Russian American Business”, from Norman, Ok and her husband and co-worker came to see the SS Cyril and Methodius Russian Orthodox Church. They had called a few days before and asked for contact information. They came down and toured the church, and then visited the library. We were very happy to have them in our library and were able to give a lot of information on the church.

Vandalism

More vandalism over the weekend at the libary. A group of kids? spray painted obscenities on the windows and doors. This is and embarressment to the community. We have had it cleaned up and it left no permenant damage, however it will leave a mistrust in us. We do not know who did it, but now we are suspicious of everyone. The library has gone out of its way to a safe and fun place for everyone. Yes, sometimes we have had to discipline, but that is a last resort when no other measures have been successful. Hopefully, the community will help in seeing that this does not become a ongoing problem. I am sad and disgusted.

This year's theme is Catch the Reading Bug and Metamorphisis. Ages for the children's program are Preschool to 5th. Teens should be from 6th to 12th. Hartshorne Library is proud to announce that the first of our playaways are beginning to arrive. A Playaway is a MP3 player that is downloaded with a book. This book is unabridged. We now have new tile in our library's meeting room. It looks really nice. Thanks to Barney Rosso for his hard work in getting the money and Chesapeake for their generousity. We painted the walls so it looks all fresh and new.

We painted our meeting room. It looks really good. We are getting some new tile installed soon. It will look great. I hope everyone gets to come and see it when it is done. We will have before and after pics when it's done.
Our New Year has not started out well, but we are ever hopeful. Cindy's father is home recuperating after his heart attack. Cindy is doing better after her bout with illness. I'm just living day to day. Amber is ever the optimist.

Oklahoma Author to visit Hartshorne Library

Friends of the Hartshorne Library, Inc. will host an author’s book signing on Saturday, December 8 at the Hartshorne Library from 11:30 until 2:30 with a reading by the author at approximately 1:00 p.m.
This year’s selected author is John Brooks of Oklahoma City, perhaps better known as the “Voice” of the University of Oklahoma Basketball and Football radio networks for 16 years and the “Voice” of the Oklahoma City Blazers and San Diego Gulls professional hockey teams for 28 seasons.
Brooks’ children’s book is titles “Bobby Bright’s Greatest Christmas Ever” and is the story of a talking Christmas tree light bulb. Being a storyteller by nature and a sportscaster by profession, Brooks’ creative skills took over and Bobby bright emerged.
Bobby and his light family speak their own special language called Bulbese. At the factory, Bobby received a special power that also enabled him to understand humans. It became his role to translate for all the other lights on the tree. For nine years Bobby and his family were relegated to the back side of a family’s Christmas tree. On the tenth year, through a set of circumstances, they were placed on the front of aa tree and magical things begin to happen.
In addition to the brightly colored cover, the 126-page book features nine pieces of art. Five of the artists who worked on the book are all former animated illustrators with either Walt Disney, Hannah Barbera or Warner Brothers.

Hard Times Day

Last Saturday was Hard Times Day in Hartshorne. There were games, booths, a quilt display, even a band. It seemed like the old days with everyone downtown. Our Friends group held a big book sale that was a great success. We thank all the people that helped run the sale and those that donated books for it. A special thanks to Jim Kurilko and Una Angleli. Also, thank you to Virginia Barlow.

The Hartshorne Garden Club decorated our meeting room with old depression items and flowers. They served refreshments. We always appreciate them using our meeting room for all there meetings and displays.

Clyde Wooldridge visits library

The Friends of the Library had a general meeting Sunday. The keynote speaker was Clyde Wooldridge, local historian. He spoke of the coal mining in the area. He is writing a book on the subject. It is very interesting to here him speak of events and people of that era. He told stories about the correlation between the coal mines and the railroad. He told how at one time this area was a booming metropolis. He told stories of McAlester, Haileyville, Hartshorne, Gowen and Wilburton. I would like to thank him for his donation of the book "McAlester: The Capital of Little Dixie" to the library. And again we would like to thank him for coming to our meeting and hope that he will consider coming again sometime.

Vandalism at the library

Sometime over the weekend the Hartshorne Library was vandalized. Someone threw rocks at the windows at the back of the library putting two large holes in a couple of the windows. There are a couple of nicks in other windows. As of now we do not know who it was, although I have a couple of suspects. I think that it is a shame that someone would do something like that. We don't know if it was retaliation or just meaness. More than likely we will never know, but it makes me sad.

Landscaping

Some much needed Landscaping was done to the Library. After we weeded and cleaned the beds out we planted some new plants, bought with donations. We trimmed up the other plants and mulched the beds. This was a job long overdue. Hopefully this will help to cut down on people using the beds as trash cans. Also, it will make it easier to clean. We are right on main street and it had become an eyesore.

Literary Reference Center

A New database has been added to our Ebsco subcription. The Literary Reference Center (LRC) is a highly graphical interface intended for public, academic and high school libraries. The primary goal of LRC is to assist high school and undergraduate English and Humanities students with homework and research assignments of a literary nature. We are proud to have this new database. It is available only in the library. If you need help finding it please ask the librarian.

New Geneaology Database

Heritage Quest is our new geneaology database. This is in addition to our Ancestry Plus Library edition. Those that are interested in finding their roots or just intersted in the past need to checkk out both of these databases. While you are on the database page take a look at all the online resources that the library has to offer.
Also on the Kids' page and the Teen Page there are databases geared towards them. We offer Sirs Discoverer, Kids Search as well as Tumble books.

This site has resources to find almost any type of antiques you may be looking for, or the value of something you may already have. Library Supporters Asked To Contact Legislators

Oklahoma library supporters have launched an effort to get increased state aid for the state's libraries. Flyers asking "What would you buy with $2.50?" are being distributed. The flyers note that increased state aid of $2.50 per person per year amounts to either a "cafe latte" at the local coffee shop, or better library services for all of Oklahoma.State aid to public libraries has averaged 50 cents per person for the past 20 years, the group notes, while the cost of materials and services has skyrocketed. No new taxes are required to increase the state aid to $2.50 per capita; funding can come from existing state revenues that have increased this year.State aid is used to meet particular needs of each library and community. Some libraries use the funds to purchase materials, while others upgrade computers, begin wireless services or provide more educational programs for children.Those who support the move for increased state library aid are being asked to call or email their legislators.
